A Declaration of Dependence

As an American, summertime brings nostalgic memories. If you’re school age, it reminds you of summer vacation. If you’re an adult, it may still remind you of summer vacation. Amidst the fun and memories, the Fourth of July remains a constant reminder of summertime. As far as I can remember, as a child, it rained almost every year on the Fourth. Yet, whether rain or shine, there was the smell of food barbecuing on a grill. In New York City, the fire hydrants was opened and all waited in anticipation to see the sky lighten with fireworks. Yes, for many the Fourth of July is a time for fun, food, and socializing.
However, at some point in life, you realize that the original purpose of the Fourth of July is not fun, food, or socializing but is instead an event to declare America’s independence from England. Have you ever stopped to wonder why the thirteen colonies wanted independence from England? The Declaration of Independence gives us insight. As it formally declares independence from the tyrannical rule of the king, it reads:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. —That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,… The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this let Facts be submitted to a candid world. The laws that governed the King’s government placed the thirteen colonies in bondage and went against the unalienable rights of, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” And yet today, although we may live in the country of freedom, there is another declaration to be made, not solely to a worldly power but to a spiritual power. “To prove this let Facts be submitted to a candid world.”
We are told that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rules of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph. 6:12). In the Christian walk, there are spiritual governments at war. During the war that was started in Heaven, Lucifer declared independence from God’s government. Instead of bearing the glory of the Creator, he endeavored to win the worship of the heavenly host. In order for him to accomplish this he had to transfer worship from God to himself, which could only be done by encouraging them to break God’s perfect law of liberty.
It is through perfect obedience to the law of God that we render Him worship, but unfortunately a third of the heavenly host choose to declare independence from God’s government. Here lays the foundational principle of Satan’s government: SELF. Satan claimed that the best way to maintain happiness is by self-exaltation. Said the prophets “… thou was perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee…thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness…” “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the most High” (Is 14:14; Ez 28:15, 17).
When Satan deceived Adam and Eve into transgressing the law of God, they chose to disbelieve God’s command, however, they did not yet understand the true results of their actions. Satan tempted Eve to believe that she could attain a higher state of being, “then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Gn 3:5). They then became in bondage to their sins, “for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage” (2 Pt 2:19). “By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin…”(Rom 5:12).
Humanity was now in league with Satan, “carnal, sold under sin”, citizens of Satan’s government (Rom 7:14). Humanity and Satan were of the same mind “because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be” (Rom 8:7). Adultery, fornication, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, envying, murder, drunkenness… and such like is the outworking of that government (Gal 5:19-21). Now living under self-government, independence from God and dependence on self became the principle that governs humanity.
At Sinai, God desired to show the children of Israel the government they operated under by giving the law in stone. However, they placed themselves in bondage by answering, “all the Lord hath spoken WE will do” (Ex 19:8). As long as they thought they could keep the law in their own strength, they would continually break the law of God.Thus the law became a “yoke of bondage.”

Therefore, the history of that nation is a history of sinning and repenting. We then see evidences of this manifested throughout the history of man and without divine intervention, our case was hopeless.
The facts show that humanity is under Satan’s tyrannical government and are “taken captive by him at his will” “for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (2 Tm 2:26; Rom 3:23). The very law that was to give us freedom from idolatry, murder, envy etc. revealed to us the deceitful and desperately wickedness of the human heart. But praises be to God, if that was not our condition we could not be recipients of God’s grace. “For the law was given by Moses but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ” (Jn 1:17).
So then, it is time to declare just as our forefathers, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness… But when a long train of abuses and usurpations…. it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
In complete contrast are the principles of God’s government. “The law of love being the foundation of the government of God, the happiness of all created beings depended upon their perfect accord with its great principles of righteousness.” How was God to accomplish this? Here enters the promise “I will put enmity between thee and the women and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel” (Gn 3:15).
Speaking about Jesus, Paul writes, “that at that time ye were without Christ… having no hope, and without God in the world… are made nigh by the blood of Christ… that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity… Now therefore ye are… fellow citizens with the saints” (Eph 2: 13, 16, 19).
The scene of the cross reveals to the dull eyes what humanity will do under the government of Satan and what the total outcome would be if Satan ruled the world. The love of God manifested by Jesus on the cross made reconciliation possible. The enmity that was once towards God and his law has been slain. The sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross settled all doubts about the principle of love, which is the foundation of God’s government. The sacrifice of the infinite One exalted and honored the law. His righteous life in perfect obedience to the law, death and resurrection, showed the exalted character of God’s government which could not be changed to meet man’s sinful condition. Therefore, the power that Jesus had on earth to live out the law of liberty in his life must be given to all. Those who declare independence from Satan’s kingdom must declare total dependence on Christ’s righteousness.
Just as we look at the flag and pledge our allegiance, as Christians we are to look to the cross and pledge our allegiance. It is what was accomplished at the cross that gives us freedom to obey the law of liberty. We must daily survey the cross and seek to understand what happened at the cross. “When we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly”; “now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ” (Rom 5:6; Rv 12:10).
In this spiritual warfare there is no such thing as dual citizenship, we cannot serve two masters. When Satan rules we are put in bondage to the laws of selfishness that govern his kingdom and we are servants of sin unto death. In God’s government you are given life, liberty and happiness in Christ who gives you power of obedience unto righteousness by his grace and the power of the indwelling Spirit. “Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Cor 3:17). When we accept, by faith, the righteousness of Christ, “we are delivered from the law… that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter” “for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life” (Rom 7:6, 2; Cor 3:6) and Christ lives out the fruits of the Spirit in us. Therefore brethren, “stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage” (Gal 5:1).
